Nostalgia: Heroes III

Games these days are great. Technology has improved so much in the last ten years, it's kind of hard to imagine the technology we'll have at our disposal in 2020. Since it's birth, gaming has evolved from 2D games to 3D games (and with some geeky glasses, "real" 3D), from sprites to polygons and models, from being confined to arcades and bowling alleys to having a place in most people's homes.

But even though the present and future technology is amazing, sometimes I can't help but look back towards my early days of gaming. Playing Nintendo with my brother. Installing as many demos I could find because I didn't have the money to buy real games. Playing online multiplayer for the first time. There are just so many fond memories, and this blogpost is going to be about one of the games I really enjoyed; Heroes of Might and Magic III.

If you've played any HoMM game at all, you know the concept. You control a hero who leads an army, which can consist of anything from ogres and eagles to golems and genies. The battlemap is made up hexagonal tiles on which you move around your forces and make epic strategical decisions. In the cities, you recruit new heroes and monsters and on the world map you can find treasures and move your units.

The game came out eleven years ago, but for me, it's just one of those games that will never get old. I just have too many crazy memories of playing hotseat with my brother, trying out different cities and generally having a great time. A funny thing though is that I've never actually finished a multiplayer game. Me and my brother never got the time to finish it in one sitting because we had a rule to always eradicate the CPU-controlled armies first. Then we just kind of always wanted to start a new game the next time we sat down to play. My goal is to finish a multiplayer game with my brother, and I hope to achieve it one day.

So that's one of the games I loved to play as a little kid. Now, what about you?

Thanks for reading!

  1. The game you describe sounds a lot like the Total War series of games. I played Rome Total war for a long time, and it was great to play all different factions and conquer the known world.

  3. yes, yes, those were the days... back when you could leave your game on for months and it would never over heat or scratch up your games.

  7. Yeah mate, I know what you mean. The gaming industry was once so great, without the internet being so popular that everyone could get anything at ease. Also I feel like all the ideas for video games have already been used, so year by year there is less and less of original content : (
Anyway, I've changed the language to english, and about that Megaman album, here are some links for the songs in it :
